The formal definitions that I found for serve are:

to assist, to be of use, to be favorable, stand by, to give the service & respect due, to comply with the commands and demands of, and to perform the duties of.

It requires much humility in being HIS servant as you serve those HE has called you to. It is realizing that because of what CHRIST did for us on the cross and the price HE paid for us we are no longer our own but servants of the MOST HIGH GOD. As servants you no longer do what you want but serve the way HE chooses for you too. It is doing HIS will heartily and with your whole soul. It is laying down your life not looking at self but for  the others highest good even when it requires much death to self. Serving is about taking on the SPIRIT of CHRIST.

I believe the definition of SERVE is surrender.  Surrender to those who have authority over you, surrender with grace and willingness.
