Are You a Pattern for the Believers?

abc-thanks.jpgHave you created something using a pattern? You know; did you use a template or a blueprint to make it easier. Most everyone enjoys using a template to jumpstart their creations.

My mother used patterns to sew clothing and quilts when my sisters, brothers and I were children. I remember sitting by her side and watching her unfold the patterns, laying them out on the table or floor. Then she would carefully study and cut each piece of cloth to make sure it was measured exactly to the specs of the pattern. It was a joy to see her finished products of dresses, suits and beautiful quilts.

Perhaps, its why I use patterns even now in my life in various ways. I use patterns, systems, templates, recipes, formulas to make my life easier. I love them. It often gives me the jumpstart I need to get things done quickly in excellence. I realized a long time ago, I can't be a master at everything. Therefore, to shorten my learning curve when I don't have the time to master a task or don't want to master it. I look for an easy template to jumpstart my work.

Not long ago, I discovered God uses patterns in our lives. Remember, all of humanity was started with the creation of one man and woman. Yes, we are created uniquely and wonderfully but in a similar pattern to Adam and Eve. And now just as importantly, he expects us to become more and more a pattern to other believers.

The Apostle Paul in a letter to the Philippians' believers encouraged them to pattern their lives after him and take note of others that lived up to his example.1 Then again, he encourages Pastor Timothy and now us with his words, "Hold tightly to the pattern of truth I taught you, especially concerning the faith and love of Jesus Christ offers you. Guard well the splendid, God given ability you received as a gift from the Holy Spirit who lives within you."2

Through the Apostle Paul and other Scripture writers, God commands us to pattern our lives after those who have ran their race well and now have gone on before us. Lately, I've been examining what kind of legacy I'm leaving or even what kind of example am I living in the now? I want to make sure I'm laying a good and worthy pattern for the believers in my circle.

How about you, dear friend? Are you a good example for your family and those in your circle of influence? Won't you join me in laying a good pattern of diligence, of being a good soldier enduring hardships of the season, making ourselves content in whatever circumstance we face or enjoy. Link arms with me in showing ourselves as a hard worker, training for excellence in communicating the gospel and as a patient farmer in the Kingdom of God sowing and reaping in due season.
